|
Nailsea - The premier lane in Nailsea |
SOLD |
|
When
glimpsed through an arch of Beeches, Harlock House clearly enjoys a gorgeous
setting and is found in the prettiest (no through) lane in Nailsea. The
whole of the “Bucklands” area is known as the premier address in the town,
set above the meadows around Backwell Lake and Bucklands Drive has always
been the cherry in the pie, ever since these fine, individual Edwardian
properties were built around a century ago.
This property together with most of the neighbouring houses was originally
built by a gentleman developer by the name of Shepstone. He, according to
his original prospectus, sought to attract “wealthy commuters to the
village” taking advantage of the railway link to Bristol. This, probably the
earliest of the speculative developments in Nailsea was clearly a success
with each property finished to order from a catalogue of designs. That
catalogue ensured that no two houses were identical and the widest variation
of styles stand in this lane including about 100 yards away, the house that
Mr Shepstone and his family occupied for a further nine decades.
Harlock House was apparently built for a local doctor and was completed just
about 100 years ago. Since that time, the house has clearly been carefully
maintained and has remained remarkably unspoiled with charming and spacious
accommodation that is enriched with all of the features that characterise a
property of this vintage. Nevertheless since the early 1990’s the house has
been tastefully updated and where required any modern additions or
enhancements have been chosen to blend perfectly with the original elements
of the house, so creating a beautiful period home with a very inviting feel
and real atmosphere.
A tessellated entrance porch opens to an impressive reception hall with the
original return staircase, cornices and mouldings, details that are still in
place throughout the house. The drawing room is gorgeous with a broad “arts
and crafts” inglenook, a period open fireplace, and a bay window. The
remaining reception rooms include a magnificent dining room while, a
colonial style conservatory provides attractive, informal living space. The
bespoke, hand made kitchen is replete with a traditional Aga cooker and
usefully a utility room adjoins.
Up the stairs then, the galleried landing leads to the four bedrooms. The
re-created Edwardian style family bathroom is very roomy and the principal
bedroom has a further, full bathroom en-suite.
An extensive attic above with skylight provides storage and scope though;
there is plenty of storage elsewhere with a boiler room and a large garage
outside.
The fully screened forecourt offers plenty of parking spaces but the real
magic of the position is only appreciated as we arrive in the garden at the
back. At about a quarter of an acre the plot is generous and level but the
legacy of past and present gardeners really makes the setting. There are
various “rooms” of the garden with broad sweeps of lawn, shady retreats,
terraces and glades all farmed by long established shrubs and trees and
enclosed by original stone walls with, at the very bottom, views over the
adjoining open fields.
All of the charms of a bygone era in a lovely peaceful, but not isolated
backwater.
It may be clear that we have been captivated by the many charms of this
house and without further, seemingly hackneyed comment we will briefly
describe the fully double-glazed and centrally heated living and ancillary
accommodation. Please note that all measurements are approximate and there
are power points throughout.
Viewings are by appointment so please telephone Hensons on 01275 810030 and our senior partner, Stuart
Burdge will be delighted to accompany you.
